Hotpoint started out in the UK in 1911 and joined forces with business competitor, the American company General Electric to form the Hotpoint Electric Appliance Company Limited (or HEAC). The company have always been recognised for their manufacture of washing machines and refrigerators and this merger meant GE had a brand to market their goods in the UK. Through this marriage of convenience it is thought the toaster became introduced to these isles.
Does the Hotpoint brand still exist? Yes it does though has become known as the Hotpoint-Ariston brand due to the company’s takeover by the Italian manufacturer Indesit. Indesit is currently one of Europe’s largest domestic appliance producers. Along with a significant number of manufacturing plants scattered across the country, Hotpoint have recently packed up and moved operations abroad. The kitchen appliance market is a fiercely competitive one and Hotpoint like other production companies are moving out where the costs are lower in an effort to survive.
